(Note: you can set your default web browser via the System Preferences. Click on Internet, then click the Web tab, then set your default browser via the Default Web Browser popup.)

Keyboard tips

You don’t have to use the mouse at all. You can choose a search engine with the up and down arrow keys. Some search engines also have command keys—for instance, Cmd-G will choose Google as the search engine. (You can set these yourself: see below.)

You can bring Huevos to the front from within any app by typing Ctrl-Esc.

You can also choose to have the main search window float above other windows: choose Float Search Window from the Window menu. To turn off floating, choose Float Search Window again.

Configuring

Bringing Huevos to the front

The hot key combination for bringing Huevos to the front—and opening the search window if necessary—can be set via the preferences. Choose Preferences from the Huevos menu and set your preferred hot key combination via the popup menus at the bottom of the window.

Editing search engines

You can add, edit, and delete search engines via the Preferences window.

To add a search engine, click the New button. To edit a search engine, select a search engine from the list and click the Edit button.

To delete a search engine, select a search engine and click the Delete button. Huevos will ask you to confirm that you want to delete a search engine before it does it.

When adding or deleting a search engine, the search engine configuration sheet appears.

In the Name field, type whatever name you want. This name will appear in the popup menu in the main search window.

The URL should be whatever URL is used to search for that site. Type %@ where your search string should appear. You might want to look at some of the default search engines for examples.

You can also set a keyboard shortcut: type a letter, character, or number in the last field. This keyboard shortcut allows you to choose a search engine when you’re in the main window.

Tips

You can close the main search window when you’re not using it. Type Cmd-W or choose Close from the File menu.

When the main search window is closed, you can bring it back by clicking on the Dock icon, typing the hot key combination for bringing Huevos to the front, or by choosing New from the File menu (or typing Cmd-N).

Huevos is designed so that the only time you need to use your mouse is when you’re configuring it. In regular use you never have to take your hands off the keyboard.

A note about browsers

Some browsers allow you to specify what they should do when another application—such as Huevos—asks it to open a URL.

Depending on your browser you may have choices such as re-using the current window, always opening new windows, or opening new tabs. These preferences are not (and cannot) be set in Huevos: they’re specific to each browser.
