Use the space bar

The space bar is the most efficient way to read news in NetNewsWire. It scrolls the description pane if it needs scrolling, otherwise it jumps to the next unread news item. You can go through all your news just by hitting the space bar.

Find out about more keyboard shortcuts

The space bar isn’t the only time-saver—choose Help > Keyboard Shortcuts for a list of more shortcuts that aren’t listed in the menus.

Let NetNewsWire find feeds

When you're on a website that you want to subscribe to, let NetNewsWire find the feed for you.

Just copy the URL of the site from your browser’s address field, click the Subscribe toolbar icon in NetNewsWire, then click the Subscribe button in the sheet that appears—and then let NetNewsWire find the feed for the site.

Customize the toolbar

The default toolbar doesn’t contain all the toolbar commands there are. Choose View > Customize Toolbar… to add more toolbar commands.

Customize the dock icon unread count

Some people don’t want the unread count to appear in their dock—it’s too much of a distraction.

You can turn off the unread count via the General preferences pane.

Scan headlines via the dock

If you click-and-hold (or ctrl-click) on NetNewsWire’s dock icon, it will list feeds and the titles of unread news items. Choose an item to open it.

If you hold down the option key, instead of opening the item it will select the item in the headlines list.

Widescreen users: display datelines in the headlines table

If you’re using the widescreen view, you don’t have much room for columns in the headlines table. You can display a dateline below each title instead of using columns.

Choose View > Layout > Show Datelines in Table.

You can also show a summary, or the first sentence or so of each item, in the headlines table. Choose View > Layout > Show Summaries in Table.
