Reading News

When you select a subscription, its news appears in the headlines table. When a headline has a description it appears in the HTML pane. ItÕs much like using an email application.

Navigating

You can use your mouse to select subscriptions and headlines. The up and down arrow keys move the selection up and down. The Tab key switches between the subscriptions, headlines, and HTML panes.

The News menu contains additional commands for going to the previous and next unread headline, opening a headline in your browser, and marking headlines as read and unread.

Many navigation commands have keyboard shortcuts and many appear in the toolbar. (Choose View > Customize ToolbarÉ)

The most useful keyboard shortcut is the space bar. It scrolls the HTML description if needed. If no scroll is needed, it goes to the next unread headline. This way you can go through all your unread news just by hitting the space bar.

Opening pages

To open a page linked-to by a headline, double-click on it or choose News > Open in Browser. Depending on your settings, the page will open in NetNewsWireÕs browser or in your default browser.

(See Browsing for more about opening web pages.)

Refreshing the news

Choose News > Refresh to refresh the news for the selected subscriptions. Choose News > Refresh All to refresh all your subscriptions.

You can tell NetNewsWire to automatically refresh your subscriptions: see Refresh Settings for more info.

Sorting

The headlines list can be sorted. Click once in a column header to sort it; click again to reverse the sort. Click a third time to return to the default sorting.

You can also choose the sorting to use via the View > Sort By menu.

Optional Columns

The Date, Subject, and Creator columns are optional. You can enable one or more of these by choosing them from the View > Columns menu.

Not all subscriptions contain dates, subjects, and creators, however. So sometimes columns will be empty.

Widescreen View

You can choose to make all three panes vertical panes by choosing Use Widescreen View from the View menu. This is especially useful for laptop displays, with their greater proportional width.
