Subscribing and Unsubscribing

The default list of subscriptions is the tiniest fraction of whatÕs available. NetNewsWire comes with a big list of sites, and there are many thousands more available on the web.

How to subscribe via the Sites Drawer

Choose View > Show Sites Drawer.

Click on a triangle to expand a category. When you select a site, its description appears in the text pane below the outline.

To subscribe to a site, click the Subscribe button. The site will be added to the Subscriptions pane and its news will be downloaded and displayed.

Choose View > Hide Sites Drawer when youÕre finished.

How to subscribe to a site found on the web

When youÕre browsing the web, and you find a site you want to subscribe toÉ

  1. Copy the address of the site from your browserÕs address field.
  2. Choose File > New SubscriptionÉ.
  3. The address you copied should be filled in automatically. If not, paste it in the text field.
  4. Click the button.

NetNewsWire will then try to find the feed for the site.

If it doesnÕt workÉ

If it doesnÕt work, then thatÕs because either the site doesnÕt have a feed or itÕs not listed in the standard way.

In that case, youÕll need to find the URL of the siteÕs RSS or Atom feed. Some sites link to it on their home page, sometimes with an XML, Atom, or RSS button. The buttons are frequently orange, which makes them easy to spot.

Once you have the URL of the feed, choose File > New Subscription, paste the URL of the feed, and click the Subscribe button.

Tips on finding feeds

Whenever you see a white-on-orange XML button you can click on it to go to the feed for a site. Then you can just copy the URL from your Web browser and paste it into the Subscribe dialog (as above).

Other sites may have a feed but not display any buttons. If you canÕt find a feed, email the webmaster for that site and ask if they have one and what its URL is.

In the Find More Sites submenu of the Help menu you can open Feeds.Scripting.Com, NewsIsFree, Radio.Weblogs.Com, and Syndic8. Each of these lists lots of feeds you can subscribe to.

How to unsubscribe

  1. Select the subscription in the Subscriptions pane that you want to delete.
  2. Choose File > UnsubscribeÉ A dialog will confirm that you want to unsubscribe.

Note: unsubscribing from a group deletes all the subscriptions inside a group.
