NetNewsWire for iPhone progress

On my weblog I posted an update: what I’ve been doing and what’s the plan.

NetNewsWire 1.0 for iPhone

NetNewsWire 1.0 for iPhone! I never expected to ship another NetNewsWire 1.0, but here it is. ;)

It’s available on the iPhone App Store. It’s free, and it syncs with NetNewsWire for Macintosh, FeedDemon, Inbox, and our browser-based reader.

The idea is that NetNewsWire for iPhone is a news reader — for those moments when you have a minute to kill in the grocery store or whatever. It doesn’t do all the heavy lifting of subscription management — it’s all about showing you the latest news items, and making it easy to go through them. (You can also clip news items to save for later.)

Share Your NewsGator Clippings with ReadBurner

Nick Bradbury: “NewsGator has partnered with ReadBurner, and as a result, it’s now dead simple to share your NewsGator clippings with ReadBurner. This means that FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator Inbox and NewsGator Online customers can easily share their clipped articles with ReadBurner.”

Here’s how to share clippings in NetNewsWire. Once you have a clippings feed, you can go to ReadBurner and add it. (See Nick’s post for more details.)

Using NetNewsWire with Your Blog, Twitter, and Del.icio.us

NetNewsWire 3.1.3 released

NetNewsWire 3.1.3 rolls back a change in the behavior of folders and the Latest News subscription. The change triggered a crashing bug for some folks, so we rolled it back. (We’ll get back to this issue with the next release—step one was to deal with the crashing bug.)

Nice post from Peter Rukavina: “Let me briefly sing the praises of the combination of NetNewsWire, my longtime RSS newsreader for the Mac, and NewsGator Mobile for the iPhone, a web-based application to which NetNewsWire automagically syncs.” He notes how clipping something using the iPhone reader causes it to appear in NetNewsWire.

Selected text in NetNewsWire + MarsEdit

Disruptive Conversations: “What’s very cool is that if you select/highlight a block of text before clicking the button you get only that part brought across into MarsEdit. On the design of NetNewsWire’s first-run assistant

NetNewsWire 3.1 is free (and there’s already a new beta)

Earlier today we released NetNewsWire 3.1—and announced that it, along with other RSS readers from NewsGator, are free. See my post on inessential.com for more info.

There were a couple bugs that weren’t found until after shipping 3.1, so we released a public beta of 3.1.1b1 on nnwbeta.com.

It fixes a crash-at-startup bug a few people reported, and it fixes a bug where the description view could disappear. (Otherwise 3.1.1b1 is the same as 3.1.)

NetNewsWire + iPhoto

Miraz Jordan writes about how, in NetNewsWire, “it’s easy to add photos from RSS feeds to iPhoto: Control click on the photo and choose Add Image to iPhoto Library from the contextual menu.”

One of my favorite parts of working on NetNewsWire is the connection to other apps: weblog editors such as MarsEdit and ecto, Apple apps like iPhoto, Address Book, and iCal, and apps like VoodooPad and Twitterrific, from my fellow Mac developers.

NetNewsWire 3.1b21: new Combined View, Leopard changes and fixes

NetNewsWire iconNetNewsWire 3.1b21 includes a new Combined View, Leopard changes and fixes, and a bunch of bug fixes.

The new Combined View is designed for better readability and skim-ability. It also breaks lots of news items up into pages, so that performance doesn’t suffer when trying to load hundreds or thousands of items at once.

Leopard changes include things like using the new folder icon in the subscriptions list and using the new dock badge standard.

See nnwbeta.com for the download and more in-depth change notes. (Yes, NetNewsWire betas now have their own domain name. ;)

NetNewsWire 3.0.1b7

NetNewsWire iconNetNewsWire 3.0.1b7 addresses the top-priority bugs from the 3.0 release.

- Smart lists and searching no longer use Spotlight, which wasn’t working for some people. (However, you can still search news items via the system’s Spotlight search.)

- The Combined View is now based on the version that was in 2.x, since that version doesn’t rely on JavaScript and thus doesn’t crash. There is more to do with the Combined View: pagination (for performance) and UI (to make titles easier to read and make it look cooler).

We’re working on other bugs, too—but these are the highest-priority items.

NewsGator REST API

Greg Reinacker: “We now have both SOAP and REST versions of the NewsGator Online API available. The SOAP version has been around for a while, and is used by our own products. The REST version is brand new, is documented here, and enters a public beta today.”

NetNewsWire uses the NewsGator Online API (of course)—it uses some SOAP calls and some REST calls. (I’d convert entirely to using the REST version, stop using SOAP entirely, were it not for the fact that you don’t fix what ain’t broke.)

NetNewsWire Sale! Just $19.95

NetNewsWire IconSpecial sale! You can buy NetNewsWire for $19.95 from right now until NetNewsWire 2.1 ships.

Or you can buy the NetNewsWire/MarsEdit bundle for just $29.95, which is an even better deal.

This sale means you save $5 on NetNewsWire, or save $10 on the NetNewsWire/MarsEdit bundle price—$20 less than if you bought them separately at regular price.

If you’re a NetNewsWire Lite user, this is a great time to upgrade.

If you’re curious about what’s in the full version that’s not in Lite, the list looks like this: searching, browsing, persistence, smart lists, flagged items, tag subscriptions, widescreen view, scriptability, HTML differences, podcast downloading, and, well, more.

Go to our online store to buy NetNewsWire or the NetNewsWire/MarsEdit bundle.

When NetNewsWire 2.1 ships, the price for NetNewsWire will be $29.95, and purchasers will get a one-year NewsGator Online subscription along with all NetNewsWire updates for one year. (NetNewsWire will continue to work if the subscription lapses, though in stand-alone mode.)

Existing users—people who already bought NetNewsWire or who buy NetNewsWire through this sale—will get a two-year NewsGator Online subscription for free, as well as all NetNewsWire updates for two years. (And, again, the software doesn’t stop working if the subscription lapses: you’ve bought the software.)

MarsEdit will remain $24.95. There will no longer be a special NetNewsWire/MarsEdit bundle price.

Which is all to say: this sale is a good deal, and it ends when NetNewsWire 2.1 ships (within the next few weeks). So please take advantage of it now!

If you don’t already have a copy of NetNewsWire, you can download it from the NetNewsWire home page—or check out the latest beta of NetNewsWire 2.1.

Just to prove it’s a beta...

We have found some bugs in the NetNewsWire 2.1 beta just released today. Which is completely expected, and just proves that it’s a beta.

Here are the two main ones, just so you know we know about them...

The first is that it doesn’t run on 10.3.9. It was working on 10.3.9, but a recent change stopped it from working. We’ll get it fixed for the next release.

The second is that, for some people, they can’t refresh at all. (We have a lead on the cause, but we’re not positive yet of the fix.)

We’re working on both bugs, of course, and there will be new betas.

NetNewsWire 2.0 downloads podcasts and enclosures, and sends podcasts to iTunes with with your choice of genre and playlist.

The flagged items feature lets you mark items that you want to keep—they stay forever or until you mark them as unflagged.

NetNewsWire 2.0 is Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) compatible, and includes Automator actions to control functions in NetNewsWire.

Other new features include syncing, smart lists, search subscriptions, and built-in styles. NetNewsWire's built-in list of feeds, the Sites Drawer, has been updated to include new categories and over 1000 new feeds that can be easily subscribed to.

See What's New in NetNewsWire 2.0 for more features, details and screen shots.

More on the ‘feed’ URL bug

Surfin’ Safari: “The feed URL dialog that tells you 10.4 must be installed to view RSS feeds is simply a bug and not part of a master plan for global domination.”

We assumed as much, but it’s nice to hear it confirmed. The question is: will there be an update for Panther users? (A few other Safari and WebKit bugs have been noted in the 10.3.9 update.)

Despite the bugs, the update has some cool new features. Our favorite may simply be the better performance.

Mail-like style for NetNewsWire

decaffeinated: “The sheet itself was for NetNewsWire; on a whim I’d decided to whip up a style to make feed items resemble email messages a la Apple Mail, and I liked what I saw.”

Speeding up Safari [and NetNewsWire]

Scott Laird: “I spent a few minutes cleaning out the cookie jar, and—amazingly enough—Safari’s a lot faster. I haven’t seen the beachball of death since I cleaned up the cookies; before I was seeing it every minute or so.”

Update: To be clear, the reason for pointing to this article is that cleaning up your Safari cookies can help NetNewsWire performance. NetNewsWire uses WebKit (the Safari engine) under the hood, which means it shares cookies with Safari.

Make Need-to-Read Blogs Even Easier to Find

PCWorld.com - Mac Skeptic: “Though NetNewsWire’s interface looks more like that of an e-mail application than a Web browser, it’s easy to get used to its look and start browsing through feeds and news items... If, like me, you have a lot of subscriptions in Bloglines, you can set NetNewsWire 2.0 to monitor these as well.”

Delete the SearchIndex file

If you’re using NetNewsWire 2.0b37, and you used earlier betas, then you can delete the SearchIndex file.

It’s probably taking up a few megabytes of space on your hard drive. (Possibly quite a few megabytes.)

Here’s what to do:

1. Make a backup of your NetNewsWire prefs and data. (It’s always a good idea to make backups.) For more about making backups, open the Help book, click on “Contents,” then click on “Backing up your data.”

2. Delete the file at ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/SearchIndex

This file is no longer used (as of 2.0b37) so it’s safe to delete.

Coalmarch Productions: “This script [for NetNewsWire] allows you to subscribe to any number of mailboxes in Mail.app. Its main use is for dropping new unread messages from subscribed news groups (yahoo/apple, etc.) so I don’t have to switch to Mail when I want to be goofing off and reading news.”
