Google Reader is about to change their login system. A few days ago we released quick-fix versions of NetNewsWire for Mac and iPhone to work with the new system.

You should make sure you’ve updated.

Macintosh: the new version is 3.2.7. You can open NetNewsWire’s About window to check the version.

If you don’t have 3.2.7, you can download the latest NetNewsWire for Macintosh.

iPhone and iPod Touch: the new version is 2.0.3. You can check what version you have by triple-tapping the toolbar at the bottom of the Feeds screen.

You can check to see if there’s an update for NetNewsWire or NetNewsWire Premium by going to the App Store on your iPhone or iPod. Tap the Updates tab. If there’s an update, install it.

Note: We have bigger updates of both versions of NetNewsWire coming. These are not those bigger updates — they’re just quick-fixes so that it continues to work with Google Reader.

NetNewsWire 2.0.2 for iPhone — bug fixes

We’ve updated both NetNewsWire free (iTunes link) and NetNewsWire Premium (iTunes link) on the App Store.

This release fixes some crashing bugs and the confused-navigation bug. We recommend updating right away, if you haven’t already.

And now back to work on 2.0.3... (We’re also working on NetNewsWire/Mac 3.2.4 at the moment.)

NetNewsWire 3.2.2 release

NetNewsWire 3.2.2 fixes some bugs — most especially that annoying bug where cmd-W would sometimes close the main window instead of the current tab.

You can download it. Also see the change notes for the rest of the scoop. (There are more things to do — but I felt that there was enough here worth a release rather than holding it up in the lab any further.)

But first, two important notes:

Check for Updates may not work

I had to make changes to the updates system. The Check for Updates command may not work — you may have to download this release and install it the old-fashioned way.

But Check for Updates should work fine after that.

Introductory pricing will continue till end of month

The first 30 days of introductory pricing is supposed to end this week.

But we decided to push it back until the end of October, since I hadn't posted a reminder recently. This is a reminder, and there will be at least one more when it gets closer. The price will go from $9.95 to $14.95 at the very end of October.

(We’re also pushing back the end of introductory pricing for the iPhone version (iTunes link): it will go from $1.99 to $4.99 at the end of October.)

NetNewsWire for iPhone 2.0.1 - crash bug fix

Both NetNewsWire free (iTunes link) and NetNewsWire Premium (iTunes link) have updates on the App Store.

These releases have just one change — the by-far-most-common crashing bug has been fixed. It was just a two-line change (followed by 12 days of App Store review).

We’re working on 2.0.2, of course, with more bug and performance fixes. There are also new features en route, though bug and performance fixes have top priority.

Important thing to know: the introductory $1.99 (USD) price for NetNewsWire Premium will go up to $4.99 in just under a week. I’m reminding you now so it doesn’t come as a surprise later: I do not want you to miss the lower price if you’re planning to buy.

NetNewsWire 3.2 for Mac and 2.0 for iPhone ship

We’ve shipped NetNewsWire 3.2 for Macintosh and NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone.

Both include Google Reader syncing and send-to-Instapaper support.

New features for the iPhone app also include starred items, in-app email, post-to-Twitter, a new app icon, and more.

NetNewsWire for iPhone updated

NetNewsWire 1.0.8 is now on the App Store. The main thing is to fix a crashing/hanging bug some folks were having. I posted 1.0.8 change notes on my weblog last week.

NetNewsWire 1.0.7 on App Store

NetNewsWire 1.0.7 for iPhone is now available on the App Store — you can update (or try it out if you haven’t before).

This is a much-improved version of NetNewsWire, significantly better than the 1.0 version. New features include the ability to email links and to remove feeds from the iPhone. Lots of bugs have been fixed, including crashing bugs, and performance is much better.

There are still plenty of things to do — this review at Macworld pretty much covers the to-do list. Next steps include a mark-unread command, being able to choose a clippings folder when clipping an item, viewing your clippings, an option to put old news items at the bottom, excerpts for news items, and more. (And, of course, more bug fixes and performance enhancements.)

(Note: the App Store says that it’s version 1.0.1, but it’s really 1.0.7.)

NetNewsWire 3.1.3 released

NetNewsWire 3.1.3 rolls back a change in the behavior of folders and the Latest News subscription. The change triggered a crashing bug for some folks, so we rolled it back. (We’ll get back to this issue with the next release—step one was to deal with the crashing bug.)

This is just a reminder for NetNewsWire Lite users: we released the full version of NetNewsWire for free. You can upgrade and get all the features of the new version. And all the bug fixes. It’s a better NetNewsWire.

NetNewsWire 3.1 is free (and there’s already a new beta)

Earlier today we released NetNewsWire 3.1—and announced that it, along with other RSS readers from NewsGator, are free. See my post on inessential.com for more info.

There were a couple bugs that weren’t found until after shipping 3.1, so we released a public beta of 3.1.1b1 on nnwbeta.com.

It fixes a crash-at-startup bug a few people reported, and it fixes a bug where the description view could disappear. (Otherwise 3.1.1b1 is the same as 3.1.)

NetNewsWire 3.1b21 includes a new Combined View, Leopard changes and fixes, and a bunch of bug fixes.

The new Combined View is designed for better readability and skim-ability. It also breaks lots of news items up into pages, so that performance doesn’t suffer when trying to load hundreds or thousands of items at once.

Leopard changes include things like using the new folder icon in the subscriptions list and using the new dock badge standard.

NetNewsWire 3.0.1b7 addresses the top-priority bugs from the 3.0 release.

- Smart lists and searching no longer use Spotlight, which wasn’t working for some people. (However, you can still search news items via the system’s Spotlight search.)

- The Combined View is now based on the version that was in 2.x, since that version doesn’t rely on JavaScript and thus doesn’t crash. There is more to do with the Combined View: pagination (for performance) and UI (to make titles easier to read and make it look cooler).

We’re working on other bugs, too—but these are the highest-priority items.

NetNewsWire 3.0 has been released. New features include Spotlight searching; integration with iCal, Address Book, Twitterrific, and other apps; Growl notifications; clippings (synced or not-synced); tabs-with-thumbnails; microformat detection; automatic update checking; and plenty more.

And, inevitably, we’re already at work on 3.0.1, and will post a beta probably later today. ;)

NetNewsWire 3.0a8 has bugs and unfinished features, but it’s getting closer to shipping. If you’re comfortable running pre-release software, you can download it.

The change notes page lists what’s new since 3.0d62, the previous sneak-peek release.

Highlights include clippings, going back/forward through news items, hiding read items, a send-to-Twitterrific command, attention report, smaller/bigger text commands, support for microformats (contacts and events), and plenty more (including performance enhancements and lots of bug fixes).

We just posted a new sneak-peek release of NetNewsWire 3. It’s still not even a beta—it’s still dangerous. You can download it from the beta page. (But really, it is dangerous, and if you’re uncomfortable with unfinished software, please wait for now.)

We just posted a sneak-peek release of NetNewsWire 3 today. It’s not even a beta yet, and it has bugs, unfinished features, unstarted features, and it still needs more polish and testing. All that said, you can download it from the beta page. ;)

The change notes page lists what’s new since 2.1.1. Highlights include Spotlight searching, new Combined View, feed ‘cover art’, full screen mode, Growl notifications, tabs with thumbnails and animations, the ability to choose a folder when subscribing, hiding/showing the subscriptions list, and lots more.
